The current Code of Canon Law is the second comprehensive codification of the non-liturgical laws of the Latin Church, replacing the Pio-Benedictine code that had been promulgated by Benedict XV in 1917.

Canon law originated as a body of norms drawn from scripture, the decisions of ecclesiastical councils, rulings by the Pope (in the form of letters known as papal decretals), as well as secular Roman law.

The canon law of the Catholic Church ("canon law" comes from Latin ius canonicum) is the system of laws and ecclesiastical legal principles made and enforced by the hierarchical authorities of the Catholic Church to regulate its external organization and government and to order and direct the activities of Catholics ...

CANON, eccl. law. This word is taken from the Greek, and signifies a rule or law. In ecclesiastical law, it is also used to designate an order of religious persons.

Code of Canon Law, Latin Codex Juris Canonici, official compilation of ecclesiastical law promulgated in 1917 and again, in revised form, in 1983, for Roman Catholics of the Latin rite. The code obliges Roman Catholics of Eastern rites only when it specifically refers to them or clearly applies to all Roman Catholics

Canon law covers such things as the process of religious service, criteria for baptism, funerals, prohibited conduct, church property, and internal boards which have jurisdiction over Church matters (ecclesiastic courts). The Roman Catholic Church has a Code of Canon Law.
